Volunteer: Amazon Hope
|
The Amazon Hope Medical and Dental Project now serves over 126 river communities which we aim to grow to just over 250 by the end of 2011. Dr Oscar Mori is in charge of the medical project assisted Dr Ronald Ramirez and his wife Dr Rosanna Mori along with a team of dentists and nurses who support visiting health teams. You can support the project by volunteering for a 2 week trip. |

A typical team of 8 will include 2-3 GPs/ other doctors, 1-2 Dentists, 2 Nurses and up to 2 general helpers who must be willing to assist the healthcare team in every way, including in the onboard pharmacy. The work is remarkably similar to that delivered in Primary Care in the UK with patients attending with common childhood ailments, skin lesions, diarrhoeal illness, chest infections, muscle pains and the very occasional tropical lesion (when the whole team including the local Peruvian doctors, come together to learn). The major difference is that the service is truly back to basics- listening to the patient, undertaking an examination using only eyes, hands and simple diagnostic tools; with the only lab test being a urine dip test if thought helpful. No referral system, no lab tests and the only second opinion is that from your colleagues onboard. The dental care is a mix of basic restorative work alongside a fair number of extractions.
