Tanzania Project

The stunning wilderness and wildlife of Serengeti National Park… The white sands of Zanzibar… The challenging trekking on Africa’s highest peak, Mt Kilimanjaro… Tanzania lays claim to an astonishing number of Africa’s most iconic and alluring places. However, despite its idyllic tourist image Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranking 151st out of 181 countries in the UN Development index. |

We are exploring the possibility of launching a 3 year pilot project in Tanzania. Life expectancy is 46 years of age (State of World Population 2007), annual per capita GNI is a mere $350 (World Bank Development Indicator 2007) and from a population of just over 40 million there are over 2.4 million orphans in the country (UNICEF, 2005). There are currently 4 projects that we are looking at in more detail, all of which are focused on the construction of homes for vulnerable children. All projects are based around the town of Moshi, near Mt Kilimanjaro, in Northern Tanzania and work with orphans or street children. Three of the projects are initiatives of individual parish churches and the other is run by a separate NGO. We expect to send a couple of work party groups to Tanzania in 2011 and more in the subsequent 2 years. We are planning on initially funding the building of the children’s homes through the extra fundraising done by work parties. |
